Hey all !!
I just picked up 4 Dubia roaches from the Lodi Serpentarium and going to see if my G.Rosea and New River will eat them. Now is there any pit falls to feeding T's roaches? should this be just a special treat or can I use Dubia's as their main food source replacing crickets? Any Advise?? _________________ Have you hugged your Tarantula Today?
how big are the roaches and how big are the T's?
B. dubia are burrowers, they can burrow easily and the T won't eat it right there and then (the plus is it should eat it at night, when it's dark and when the roach comes up).
You should be fine with them.. I know some T's (depending their personality) will refuse roaches no matter what you do... but most seem to do well :) _________________ coming and invading :)

I've got about 50 Ts right now and as of the last two weeks they've all been eating dubias (Thanks Stew! ). All appear to have eaten, except for my two 1.5" A. avic slings which I'll check on tonight. And everyone has been fed twice. I'm going completely to dubia's now. _________________ Your tools are only as good as you are.

Hey Balam, thanks! these roaches are maybe 1/2 - 3/4 inch, The new river is roughly 3 - 3 1/2 inches and the G.Rosea is 5 inches. Marley my New river may go for it, not sure about the Rosea though _________________ Have you hugged your Tarantula Today?
If the rosea is on high substrate, the roach will burrow.
It also really depends on how big the enclosure is, I had a 4" G. rosea in a large KK with 6" of substrate... the roach would simply burrow and avoid the rosie.
Take the same spider, place her on 2" or less of substrate, and reduce the enclosure size (this way they have a better chance of running into each other), and my rosie had dinner :)
Both of your T's should be fine.
B. dubia roaches also tend not to be as mobile as other... lateralis roaches are fast moving (but they can climb glass :p ), adult T's seem to do well on dubias, slings may require a little faster moving roach in order to spark interest.
both are in 10 gallon tanks, the rosea has about 4 inches of substrate, the new river is a huge digger and has about 6 inches of substrate but...usually comes out when the screen top is open and waiting for food, its usualy drop the cricket...attack! the Rosea only eats at night so if the dubia is foraging for food when the Rosea is hunting that could be good :)

balams dubia advice hits the spot . My whites tree frogs will only eat smallish fresh molted - both of em ! They are my lovable sissies. i gave a baby to my avic and thought she got it , but found it the next time i cleaned her cage , like twice the size so now i hand them to her with alligator forcepts which are extremely handy implements by the way ( Jorvet also Storz instruments)
Ok so I finally put a roach in my new rivers cage, the roach crawled over and since the have not moved...almost like they have been staring each other down for 12 hours LOL _________________ Have you hugged your Tarantula Today?

LOL, I know that's irritating when they do that. I like it when the T's pounce on them right away but that doesnt always happen. At least you know the roach is there when the time is right and they live far longer than crickets. I feed mine nothing but roaches. Start a colony, they're fun to keep!
