We had an awesome day at the Exploratorium.
Special thanks to Sparky, Peter (Not-Dave), who I still call Dave, Josh and Jasmine and of course John.
I am sorry John that I forgot your drinks twice. I was so taken by the whole show, the many wonderful costumes, that I forgot to get you a diet coke and coffee.
Also a BIG THANKS to the Exploratorium for inviting us to this special Halloween event. It was truly the best show EVER!
We got to SF without getting stuck in traffic, because we took the 37 and the Golden Gate Bridge. We arrived an hour early to get a quick bite to eat at Ft Mason. Then headed over to the Palace of Fine Arts at 1:30. We had two huge tables right smack in the middle of the Exploratorium.
We started setting up, but soon we realized that it was tough for the both of us to work on the set up, because people were curious what we had and then were eager to fold our T’s.
John took over talking to the crowd while I finished setting up. We filled up all the space with T’s and cool Halloween decoration..
Pretty much from 2 - 8:15 we were busy talking to Halloween visitors, most of them dressed up in very cool outfits. I was able to take a 15 min break to get some coffee and a hot dog, while John, Sparky and Peter stayed at the table. I wanted to walk around but it was impossible because the table was so crowded. John took a 15 minute break as well but did not get very far either..lol.
I don’t even think Sparky or Peter took a break.
Sparky and Peter left around 6:15, both were a tremendous help to us and we were very grateful , it was impossible for two people to do this. Thank you guys!!!
Pretty soon at around 6:45 or so Josh and Jasmine arrived to help till the end. Jasmine even held John’s smithi and talked to people, she is a real trooper.
After closing at 8:00 they allowed us to do a touring of the Neverwas Haul—Special Preview, what a treat.
I think I saw many people coming by our table three, some even four times to hold yet another Tarantula, one teenager was first very hesitant to hold one, but after seeing that a little girl was able to do it he decided to hold one himself. He came back with his dad four more times and was so fascinated that I think he fell in love with our wonderful Tarantulas.
Another amazing story was of a woman holding John’s smithi. She confessed to me that it had been her fist time holding one and that she had a life long phobia and had to get help by overcoming her fear of spiders. She told me she did a lot of reading to better understand their purpose and was able to slowly feel more comfortable with them but not till tonight had she held one. It felt great to know that we were able to make a big difference in her life, helping her with her final step.
In-between talking to so many visitors, out of the crowd came bonobo with her girl friend. That was a real treat to finally meet her! What a delightful person and so very curious about everything. Thank you for the candy bags you gave us, that was very nice.
She was very eager to meet Sol, my P irminia, but as usual, that little bugger was in her hide.
Bonobo you guys must come to our January meeting in Concord and you must add a Suntiger.
Overall this was truly a success for SFBATS, I am so proud to be part of this great group of people.
Laurie, expect a call from a nice curious mother. She is very eager to have you come out to a school in SF to teach children all about Tarantulas. I don’t recall her name, but it was something like Dora, she has a Latin accent. I am sorry I should have written down her name, but it was too crazy.
I did shoot a video, but it will take me a while to put it together. _________________ Visit me @Tarantulas.us
