Urticating Hair in eye

Two nights ago I had cleaned out my N chromatus’s enclosure due to a possible nematode problem.

The little guy was actually quite sweet when I had to transfer him, he did flick a few urticating hairs at me, but never got me directly.

A few hours later I took a shower before I went to bed. While washing my face I got something in my eye, which I was not able to get out right away.

It took me about a half an hour to flush out my eye and to finally feel comfortable again and see.

What I had experienced was a very needle sharp pain on the outer part of my eye. I knew right away that I must have transferred an urticating hair into my eye while washing my face.

So, after frightening my co-workers at work for two days I decided to go to Urgent Care today to have the doctor look at it and to make sure the hair was not longer present and not to get an infection.

It was confirmed that there was no hair, but the outer layer of my eye, the sclera, the dense fibrous opaque white outer coat enclosing the eyeball had been scratched up badly.
She prescribed an antibiotic called Ploymyxin-B Solution.
I’ll have to add one drop to my eye four times a day to prevent it of getting infected.

She also said that the eye will heal by itself. My vision was not affected by it since the hair had not damaged the conjunctiva.

I educated the doctor about Tarantulas and urticating hair, she seemed very interested in the hair and said that she had never had a patient come in with this problem before.
I told her I love to be the first…lol

So, anyone that cleans a cage of new world terrestrial Tarantulas should always wear latex gloves and goggles. This really taught me a lesson, it could have been much worse I suppose.

Oh here is the pictures of my ugly insured eye…

When it happened, yes. It felt like a needle was poking my eye.

Nope. I'm boring.

That sucks! I hate eye stuff. I had to go to the doctor earlier this year because I got something in my eye when I was cleaing out my white's tree frog tank. I don't know if it was skin secretions or what but it really hurt. I had to put antibiotics in it for a week before it finally went away.
Now I'm REALLY careful not to touch my eye and keep my head out of my tanks when I'm cleaning.  :-P
