SFBATS Winter Webfest - January 17th

Happy Edgar??

And usual time and place?  11am-4pm?

BayLee, lets collaborate on the artwork and I'll make another poster, I was thinking of a Tarantula snowman, or a tarantula in a beach chair with sunglasses getting a tan.. (this is California)...
llamamama

Put a palm tree with Christmas lights on the beach with the tanning tarantula.   :D
northswan04

I like it!  I'll start tonight.
BayLee

Great ideas guys! I think Rachel is great at that stuff as well. She may a have much better programs to create one, however I can pull some stuff together as well.

I like the idea of a tarantula in a beach chair with sunglasses getting a tan on the beach and a palm tree with Christmas lights.
northswan04

Me too, I can only hand draw though so I could sketch something and scan it and Rachael can recreate and manipulate it on the computer.
BayLee

That sounds good to me.

And a couple bottles of Corona stuck in the sand, lol. Great ideas, everyone!  I might have a new cage or two to bring to the meeting. Start saving your money Laurie!
llamamama

LOL!  Guess I better figure out what awesome spider is gonna go in those awesome cages!
BayLee

Hey we should have a contest for the most creative enclosure.

John has been doing such a great job. I would love to challenge him.
llamamama

That sounds like fun!  I have limitations on some of mine, because they have to be able to travel without breaking easily, be a reasonable weight, display well, and preferably be locking.  How's that for a challenge?
BayLee

That actually sucks. If you pack it well you should be fine. Styrofoam does wonders
llamamama

LOL!   Yes, packing it well is important, but it has to be packed with multiple other cages, unpack easily in a classroom, still look good, and not make a styrofoam mess.  Ask John and Rachel, they've seen a small version of the eight-legged traveling wonders.  :D

I actually really like the cages that Adam from tarantulacages.com makes.  They are good for this situation.

I do think it would be fun to have a cage-designing contest.
BayLee

Yes, I know John and Rachel always surprise me. Most of all Rachel with her small car. I don't know how she does it!

I may have to take some lessons form them.
llamamama

I had that whole "spider queen" booth in my little Suburu -- all of it.  Not bad for a little car -- tent, tables, decorations, a lot of T's, and me (in costume).
Arachnocat

My car is a tardis, thats why I can fit my entire T and roach collection in there  :D
Really, them little cars can hold a lot. You would be suprised the amount of stuff I've been able to cram in there.
llamamama

True, true, some little cars are amazing!  I had a 10" pop-up shade tent, two 6' tables, a smaller table, a folding chair, two good sized boxes of decorations and table clothes, and about a dozen cages/tanks, plus some smaller containers with little T's, and some boxes with molts.  And me, and my costume.

And it was worth it, especially since you guys came to see me!  :D
Arachnocat

I'll see what I can come up with for the flyer. Those are some great ideas!! :D
I'll have a few designs ready by next week.

Hey! That's a good idea. Send me your hand drawn arts and I'll put em in a flyer/poster for us!!  :D

xenobug@gmail.com

I would like to get them to the printer by the end of next week so we have time to distribute them before the meeting.
northswan04

Can do!
TheNatureMan

This place looks like its full of crazy women.

Should I be afraid?
llamamama

LOL!!!  Be afraid, vewy, vewy afraid!

No, actually it's just Edgar you have to watch out for.  And John lives at Napa State, so that should tell you enough about him.

EdgarOrtega

Who do we have for guest speaker(s)? Just noticed it in the flyer.
UglyKid2

It's been Robert from insectgeeks.com the last 2 or 3 meetings but I haven't heard if he's doing this again. Ken usually sets it up with him.

Allright guys, just remember... Since this is arachnid-oriented, you'll be competing in teams of four...
EdgarOrtega

Its arachnid related cause of the hairy legs
Synn

I'm really looking forward to this! (man I'm awesome, a rat show, a bug show, and a chicken show all in the same month! Heck yeah!)

Whats the address of the place?
llamamama

Go, girl!  Where are you taking the chookies?  To the Stockton show?

Aww man, sad. Well if theres any particular breed you've been wanting I'd be willing to pick one up for you at the show, and you could get it from me in Novato or something :) I have a good eye,  Iknow most of the breeds standards.
Synn

llamamama

Ken has some...you could email him and ask him if he'll bring some to the meeting.

The Pacific Poultry Breeders Association winter show. Poultry breeders from across the country, Canada, Mexico, ect come up for this epic, big ass show. It's very very fun. It's at the San Joaquin Country Fairgrounds January 24th
Synn

Meep, I'm excited for this get together    I've convinced myself that I MUST hold at least one T! Because I have a secret... I'm deathly afraid of spiders, I've never held one before. They fascinate me like nothing else though, I looove looking at them (behind glass!) but if someone has a super easy going, slow moving big ol' T, I think I can do it... hopefully
UglyKid2

I've got a nice Mexican Red knee you can hold. It's the same one the gal was holding in our news broadcast. Its the tamest one I own
Synn

Oh yeah I saw that video, I would totally hold that T. :) Yay I'm excited
llamamama

My daughter used to be afraid of spiders.  She was petting a favorite red-knee of mine yesterday.  There is hope! (but she still loves her chickens more) LOL
Arachnocat

I didn't actually hold any of my T's till about a year or so after I started keeping them. I was really afraid they would bite me. Eventually I held my chaco and now I take her out whenever people are at my house and want to see my collection. She's probably the only one I have that I will hold though.
I let my l. parahybana walk over my hand which was neat (she's heavy!). I have a psycho versicolor that isn't afraid of anything so I haven't tried to hold her yet. I just put her in my big tall tank last weekend with lots of plants. She seems to be enjoying it (as long as I keep my hands out of there) lol.

Bringing a new enthusiast

Here's a pic of my 12 year old daughter with her new Brachypelma smithi.

I'd say life is good! You'll see her at the meeting.
llamamama

Cute kid!  Yes, bring her to the meeting...she can hold a bigger smithi!  lol
Bonedog

She also has a Grammostola  pulchra. She's looking forward to the 17th. She's got some cash and she's looking to spend it.
llamamama

Uh-oh!  Shopping trip!

WOw, what a great picture and she has great hair.
Bonedog

Trying to get her to brush that in the morning is a task all on it's own.
Bonedog

I think they like her because her hands are warm.
EdgarOrtega

Oh man. I've been slacking. I'll try to contact some newspapers, now, to see if anyone wants to do a story on us. Of course, I do this with less than a week to go.

We also have the craigslist ad advertising the meeting and on the other forums if someone is posting announcements. We've got our postcards being distributed around as well, I trust.

The SFBATS forum has added 27 new members since the last meeting! That's no small accomplishment, so I expect our meetings will have more people throughout the year.

Tell your friends, bring them along. Invite your teachers, co-workers, hospital staff, roommates, girlfriends, boyfriends, and "spiderhesitant" reptile keepers. Spread the word about Winter Webfest!
