San Francisco Reptile Show!

This show is going to be May 16-17, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA
http://www.sanjosereptileshow.com/

We still need volunteers to help at our first ever, San Francisco Bay Area Tarantula booth! We will have a couple of tables there with our new banner, cards, information and, of course tarantulas! This should also help increase our membership size. When most people look at tarantulas for sale at the shows they usually only see a  dirty deli cup with a shadow inside. Imagine their thrill when they see them out and close up at our table! We need you to help answer questions about our organization and tarantulas, of course....Other inverts will be on display such as roaches, millipedes and whip scorpions. We cannot sell anything because we get these tables for free as a non-profit group. Even just an hour of your time would be an enormous help...So come on down to SF, enjoy the show, and be a part of our Batty Group!
If you can help, please PM either arachnocat(Rachel) or myself and let us know what day and how long you can be there. Thanks!
llamamama

I'm in, of course.
BayLee

Me too
Synn

I'll be wandering the show Saturday near the end and I'll be sure to stop bye and say hello! :D I'm hoping to pick up a garter snake or a black milk snake...
Arachnocat

Looks like SFBATS is going to be there 2 days so we need to figure out who wants to do what day, or if they want to do both.
I'm thinking I'll do both, but I might get a hotel. I don't know yet...
UglyKid2

As of now we still only have 4 people and 2 of those can only be there on Saturday. We desperately need your help! Please help us get the word out about SF Bats! This is our big chance to meet the public and put a positive spin on tarantula keeping. Be a part of the SF reptile show and bring your T's to show!

If you can help please PM Rachel or myself and let us know what days or hours you can be there. Even just an hour or two will be a tremendous help!
Arachnocat

If you only want to stay a few hours thats ok too! Any volunteers that want to do shifts would help us out a lot. So if you're going to the show anyway, stop by and hang out with us for a bit :-)
I'm able to be there both days for sure.
Ricky Ortiz84

how many people have voulenteered so far? I can probably do it one day for a little while not sure on what day I'll be going probably a sunday.
sntcruzan

Can you give us a schedule of the volunteers/time slots that are already taken?
UglyKid2

So far its John, Rachel, Laurie, and Lony all day Saturday which is great but only John  and Rachel all day Sunday
Synn

I would but since I dont REALLY know anything about T's and the fact that I'll only be there for a couple hours before closing on Saturday and will be busy trying to find a snake or two to buy, I dont think I can volunteer x.x Sorry guys <3
northswan04

Thanks to Edgar my friend Kelly and I will be there Sunday 2-Closing (4 or 5?)

Ha he got you too huh My grilfriend and I are going to be there from opening to 2 or 3pm. oh but hey you should bring your Ducati so I can ride it
Synn

So this guy pointed out to me the other day that at this time of the year, there's not going to be any baby snakes there, only the rejects from last year. That true? I dont want a yearling, I like raising mine from as young as possible! D: But the one in San Jose in August will have loads of babies, right? I'm going to go to the SF one either way but might have to wait to buy something until the SJ one...
Arachnocat

Baby corns are just starting to hatch now for a lot of people. There will probably be more in August, but I've never been to a reptile show that didn't have tons of baby snakes. Depends on what you're looking for though. I'm hoping to pick up a false water cobra maybe.
Synn

Well I have a couple of possible breeds but I'm hoping to get one of the following: hognose, black milk, mexican black kingsnake, or white sided rat snake. But I'm not sure when those hatch in the year generally. Oh well I guess I'll see whats there!
Arachnocat

Those are all cool snakes! I don't really know what hatches this time of year either. I don't have much money so I'm going to have to decide on ONE snake probably. That's going to be hard lol. I also like them little western hognoses. Bullsnakes are cool too. Decisions, decisions...
DeeCasey

Go for the Western Hognose! They are so cute!

Yeah and I really like that they can be kept in a 10 gallon instead of a 20 Long like the others I'm thinking about
llamamama

Madison, why, oh why, would you want to start with a tiny baby?  The thrive rate would be much higher with a slightly older one.  And why, oh why, would you want to *buy* one, when, depending on what you want, you could adopt it from me for free?  Or I might have the connections to get you what you want!  LOL
Synn

Laurie have I told you I love you lately?
Well I don't want a tiny baby, I need one thats healthy and eating :P But the main thing I care about is personality, I want a mellow, non bitey snake! Though I know no other snake can be as much of an angel as my dear little Cornelius, he's perfect
Arachnocat

That's true, Laurie can hook u up. Hehe!
I can kinda understand wanting a baby though. I got a baby RTB so I could watch it grow from a lil hatchling into a giant. I wanted one I could keep for it's whole life so I didn't want to start with a biggie, although there's lots of big RTBs on craigslist all the time. Makes me kinda sad so many people don't want them when the get bigger.  :-(
llamamama

Yeah, you have no idea how many RTB's I see in a year.
Synn

Yeah we have one at Pet Arcade. He's probably 4 feet long. Great snake, a little nervous but doesn't bite. I hope he finds a new home soon... I'm really blunt to people who look at our larger snakes, I tell them right off the bat how expensive they will be to house and how much room and stuff they ned. I usually scare them off after the first 5 minutes but it's better than them getting a snake they cannot care for, which happens ALL the time with these great snakes.
Ricky Ortiz84

well now I'll just throw this out there since were on the topic of snakes I'm looking for a pair or just one semi adult wester hognose I really dont want a baby they grow really slow well at least for me and the good size one I got from Bill at serpentarium keept regurging on me so yeah western  hognoses for RICKY!!!!!!!
northswan04

Laughing @ Ricky!!!  Dude do you have a bike at all?  Because we could meet up and go for a rideee....
(Snakes are cool too :-D)

actually no I do not and I've only driven one a couple times but I'm a fast learner  I drove my friends 98 and 08 600 ninja they were fun my pops wont let me touch his Harley But I'm working on getting one anyone wanna trade a bike for a 96 pontiac sunfire??? good car!! LOL
Synn

The more I think about it, the more sure I am that I should get a hognose.
I've noticed that if they carry anything, they are UBER expensive, but if they're just regulars, they're around $75. I went to the EBV today and they had one het for... something, can't remember now, and he was freaking $300! He was SOOOO SWEET THOUGH arg if I had the money I would have snagged him....
So yeah Laurie, if you can keep your eyes out for a very sweet hognose, I'd be very interested! I don't care about color/genes, just temperament. But I definitely cannot spend $300 on a snake xD IF I had that money, I'd buy a freaking brazilian rainbow boa! *swoons* But for my budget/space concerns right now, a hognose is purrrrfect!
Arachnocat

Western hognoses really go up in price if they're not normal. I've seen some nice ones though. The red hognoses are awesome! I like going to kingsnake.com and drooling over the hog morphs. lol. If I had more money I would definitely get some cool morph hoggy.
I also kinda like the black and the tri-color hogs.
llamamama

OK, got it...I'm to keep my eyes open for a hognose...for Madison, Ricky, and Rachel.  Who gets first pick? LOL

No, seriously, it never hurts to ask, cuz if you didn't, it would show up at the Rescue and I wouldn't know you were interested.   You just never know what might show up!
Ricky Ortiz84

oh and this should go without saying but just in case any extra GTP's that should pass through there and you need to home them my door is always open for GTP's
Arachnocat

Don't worry about me, I got a cool golden hoggy comin already!
But please let me know if you get any more madagascar hogs in that need a home!
llamamama

Ricky, if I need a home for my little GTP, you will be first on the list.
northswan04

WRB

My friend Kelly and I will be volunteering at the booth for 3 + hours no compensation other than water required however, my bf and I have been looking for a female husky pup for a while so if you have access/info please contact us.
Synn

I'm so excited for the show its ridiculous... xD *bounces around the room* I think I'm going to get a pair of hognoses if I see some I like, so that I can get some babies

I'm excited that SFBATS is hitting the shows and introducing itself to the people at the reptile shows. :D

SFBATS is gonna body-slam the herp world and run its hairy spider legs all over this place.

Let's call it practice for Sacramento.

It's killing me that I can't go. Hope everyone has fun. I'm getting lots of work right now so I have to go with the flow. I'm going to the show in August and Kiely and I would love to help out for a good block of time one day.
llamamama

What critters are you bringing on Saturday?  I'm used to packing up a couple of boxes worth, but I know we won't have room for that much.

I'm guessing that bringing critters that can be handled will best for this venue.  Best options I have are:

0.2.0 B. smithi
0.1.0 G. rosea (rcf)
0.2.0 G. rosea
0.1 A. versicolor adult
0.0.1 A. versicolor sling/juvy
0.0.1 A. avic
1.1.0 B. albopilosum
0.1.0 G. aureostriata
0.1.0 E. campestrata

I can also borrow the emilia and the klaasi from Al that were so popular at the last meeting.

I won't bring all of these.  Or I *can* bring them all, and we can put them under the table and rotate them.  Are we going to have access to power?  I can bring emperor scorps with blacklight if anyone thinks that's a good idea.

John, are you going to bring your millis?

Rachel is going to bring the postcards and business cards, and some care sheets.  I will bring my tarantula info sheets and books.  Anyone think of anything else we should have?  I want to rock this show!
UglyKid2

Too bad we  dont have a battery powered blacklight. Power was $35 extra so I didnt buy it. I'll bring a extension cord just in case we can "poach" some, lol so bring it and we'll see. Yes, bring the scorps and I'll bring the millis...I wont bring my smithi  or chaco if you and Rachel got those covered.
Arachnocat

I'm bringing:

l. parahybana (big female w/ 20 gal tank - everything else is in small kritter keepers)
curlyhair
chilean copper
a. avic
rosehair
chaco
tiger hissers
american roaches

business cards
banner
caresheets
postcards
Arachnocat

Oh we will need some rope for the banner probably. I don't have any :-P
UglyKid2

Here's my list so far. Let me know if you want me to bring anything else:
Adult L. klugi
Flagstaff orange
whipscorpions
giant millis
hissers
bat kite
Tarantula! poster
twine for banner
extension cord
sharpies
tape
llamamama

COOL!

John, why don't you leave your smithi at home and I'll bring Juanita.  I was going to put her in a five gallon, but I will leave her as is until after the weekend.  I have a small, battery powered black light....I won't move the emperors into a deeper tank like I planned, that way the little black light should work.  If I come across a better one before the weekend, I'll snag it.

I can bring my Chaco and PZB in critter keepers.  They are mellow enough I trust them with my kids (or vice versa).  Same with both the Curlies.  We can keep the bigger cages on the table all day and stash the smaller ones under the table and rotate them.  I think I will bring one of my GBB's, since they have such great color.  Looking for color variety here.

Woohoo!  We're gonna be soooooo cool!
llamamama

I've got rope for the banner, also have bungee cords.
llamamama

John, do you want me to bring the black tablecloths, or do they provide tablecloths?
UglyKid2

They provide the tablecloths...
We're gonna be so prepared, Boy Scouts pale in comparison!
llamamama

ROFL!  You better believe it!
Arachnocat

EdgarOrtega

I see the listed vendor list is up to about 37. I'm sure there will be a few more. Should be a nice little show! :)

You all better take some photos so I can see what I missed.

Keep John away from the Monster Drinks! heheh
Arachnocat

Oh yes, I plan on taking LOTS of pics

Looking forward to them energy drink samples tooooo
UglyKid2

Maybe we can scalp those other 2 vendor badges to pay for those drinks!
Can we get another parking pass at the door?
Arachnocat

I'm pretty sure we can buy extra parking passes, but I will ask just to make sure.
A weekend parking pass is $20 for vendors, not sure if it's a different price for people attending...

I forgot to mention that for people without vendor passes
admission is:
$9 adults
$5 kids 6-12
kids 5 and under FREE
Ricky Ortiz84

I'll be there sunday morning so should I get there at 930? or  just go when doors open since i dont have a vendor pass? I'll be bringing my camera as well to get lots of pics!
BayLee

DO you guys want me to bring any critters? Since I would most likely have to pay for parking etc and walk a long way, not sure if it is a good idea.
Let me know
Pacmaster

Hey guys, I know I flaked on the last show(Im praying my old car gets me down to the bay this tme . . .) but Im definately gonna be at the Cow Palace!

Im gonna be workin at James' booth, so Im pretty sure Ill see most of you guys at some point.
Arachnocat

If you don't have a vendor pass, you probably won't be able to get in till doors open.

I think we're covered on critters but if anyone wants to bring something to show you are very welcome to!
sntcruzan

I 'm not going to be able to help out this time. I need extra rest , my immune sytem is vulnerable to infections. Sunday I am going to a friends memorial service. He died from cancer complications. He was under treatment for 15 months before going home to the Lord. Only 50 years old  and with a wife, a son and a daughter left behind.
llamamama

Fred, you take care of you, we'll take care of the show.  We'll take lots of pictures, and we'll be thinking of you.
BayLee

Fred my sincere condolences to you and your friends family.

Please rest up and take care of yourself
BayLee

llamamama wrote:

Oh that is what I can do, I will bring my camera of course when not at working I can walk around and take pictures.
llamamama

That would be wonderful, Lony, since you take great pictures!
BayLee

You too. Your got a awesome camera. The More the Merrier!
Arachnocat

I'll be taking  pics too. Maybe a video if I get around to it, depending on how busy we are at the booth.
Arachnocat

I've decided not to bring my roaches. Trying to keep it simple since I have a lot of other things to bring.
To add to my list, I'll also be bringing:

Donation Jar
Free T-Shirt Drawing (mailing list) sign
Info slips for drawing
Salmon Pink Caresheets
Chaco Caresheets

I wanted to do more caresheets but I think thats all I will have time to set up before the show. :-P
Arachnocat

About the parking.. Message from Herp World Expo promoter Mary:

"The Cow Palace has decided to give us a break. The original price was $20
per pass, and now they are $12. For a second pass, you will only owe me
$4. You can pay me cash when we see you for set-up."

You don't have to bring anything. Just a smile. :D

I can be the cheerleader for this show..You guys are doing an incredble job of getting our name out there to the community
northswan04

Kelly and I will probably get there around 1 on Sunday, how do we pick up vendor passes/parking ticket?  Can someone at the booth bring them out or will they be at the door??
Arachnocat

They only gave us a few passes so you will probably have to pay to get in. There's a dollar off coupon here though:
http://herpworldexpo.com/detailssf.html

That's for Saturday at least. We might have extra passes for Sunday. Not sure yet. Lony and Laurie won't be there Sunday so we can probably give them to you guys :-)
I will find out for sure. For people picking up passes I will try to leave them at the front for you to pick up when you come in
UglyKid2

Also, at this point there are only 2 parking passes and Rachel and I get those since we will be opening both days, bringing tables, chairs and displays and be there all day.
Arachnocat

The website says parking is $8 for attendees.
Lony will be with us on Sunday as well so we will only have one vendor pass available that day.
Arachnocat

Marlene can have the vendor pass for Sunday.
I'm so excited! I hope I can get some sleep tonight, I'll probably be waking up at 5am to pack etc.
llamamama

LOL!  I'm going to pack TONIGHT!
UglyKid2

Should I bring my "bucket 'o molts?"
UglyKid2

I've been up since 4:15! Can't sleep....going over last minute details.     See you all there!
northswan04

Thanks Rachael!

4:14, Omgosh!!  I get to study all day today and then the fun begins tomorrow!
Synn

I was there this morning! Phew it was great! I stopped by but the booth was over run with people so I didn't want to bother anyone :P

I managed to find a great pair of hognoses! I'll post pics in the reptile section <3 Love them already
Ricky Ortiz84

Hey Syn how much did you pay for them?
Synn

Ricky Ortiz84 wrote:

Only 50 each! The only other hog i saw was at the same booth, it was another little male. But he was even squirmier.
Arachnocat

Today was fun, but hot! There's no air conditioning in the building and I started feeling a little sick. I'm sorry I had to leave early. We should have a few fans tomorrow so that will help a lot.
I'm recovering in my hotel room. No air conditioning in here either. lol!
At least I have internet!

Where did you get your hognoses? I looked for them but only saw a little tiny one at EBV. I'll be taking more pics tomorrow. Today I mostly just went around filming stuff.

Saw lots of neat snakes. No bullsnakes but I have my eye on a nice looking false water cobra that I might pick up tomorrow if its still there!
Bonedog

It's expected to be about the same as today. Bring fans and drink lots of water. Think of all of us poor invert folks who couldn't make it. Have lots of fun.

Here's a pic I took of Laurie in our booth today with my cell phone. More and better pics will be posted soon. It was an absolutely great day with many, many wide eyed kids and adults just loving our stuff!

Synn

Great pic! the booth really did look WONDERFUL i forgot to add!

Pictures will be posted soon. I am uploading them now.
