right place, right time!I noticed my 4" G. rosea was webbing a little mat around itself today, very urgently. He never webs. So I had a feeling... and sure enough, I happened to come into the room when it was making a thick floor mat of silk. I watched as it got down on it's side, sort of like a horse at rest, and eventually heaved itself over onto its back. So now it's on it's molty way!
I can't believe I lucked out and got to see the start of this process. Now I've got a video camera trained on it and will try to record the full molt (we shall see... I've only got 3 hours of tape!) and then time-lapse it.
Very neato.

No way you say your rosea do the flip?
Wow, very rarely is that seen, unless you have a lot of time on your hand and you watch your T's constantly.
Congrats, that is way cool!
You are ahead of me. I have never witnessed it.

I just couldn't believe it. It was webbing earlier today, and when I returned this evening it was doing it again but in a slightly different spot (closer to the glass - thanks!). It was doing it with such urgency that I had a pretty good idea what was going to happen, and just happened to still be looking at it when it did it. If only I had grabbed the camera _before_ that, when I had my inkling...!
So far, it is absolutely still, at least as it appears to me. Wow. I wonder if this will be its "ultimate molt" as it is a fairly large spider, and apparently male?

Your male should hook out if it hasnt and matures here. IDK how big your guy is though.

Try that again? Sorry, I'm daft. If you're asking if it has hooks yet, no, it doesn't. It's about 4". Maybe a little bigger. Non-red rosea - the grayer morph with reflective pinkish carapace.........

Does this board have a chat room?? I'm beginning to think that's the way to go...
No movement yet or change which I can discern. I'm going to go imbibe some fragrant alcohol and relax as I watch.

Five hours in, barely any movement. We'll see what he looks like in the AM...

Sounds like this could mean this is the molt to his maturaty. My girl took forever too. Make sure you got a water dish in the enclosure.

That's really cool Peter! I think in my few years of ts I've only seen that maybe once possibly twice (I had so many at one point is was just inevitable). Another rare site is watching a T build and "use" a sperm web. Neat stuff, if it's 4" and you know it's a boy there's a super high chance it will mature. That should be a pretty big male rosie!

Report: woke up this morning to find a red tarantula!! His new form is way pinker/redder than it was. I'm shocked. And he's huge. (If I hadn't dropped and destroyed my digital camera last weekend, I'd take a photo... but the replacement is due any day.)
I can't get a good look at its pedipalps at the moment to see if they're bulbous; is it not the case that if it matured, it would have both tibial hooks and "boxing glove" pedipalps? Or might those take longer to develop, or...?

And here he is. Still no angle on him to see his pedipalps, and I don't want to touch him yet... check out the awesome carapace!

Judging by leg length, carapace size and color, etc. I would bet mucho $$$ he is mature now. Very nice!
