i took the dogs for a walk todayand i thought i'd take along my new field hook to try out
this is what i found
these guys were pretty cold so they were real easy to catch
cute, huh? i found at least a dozen of these today but only 4 or 5 were cool enough to photograph
i can never get enough of these things, they look like something from a B-movie
this one in particular was quite a bit more active than i'm used to
last but, not least... i found this under a log
curious soul that i am, i decided to investigate further
is it?
it was so dead asleep that all it did was squirm a little when i was moving it gently with a piece of grass isn't it just adorable?
that's about all i found(definitely all i took pics of)
hope y'all enjoy

I love those blue belly lizards. I used to catch those all the time when I was little - so did my cats unfortunately!. I rescued quite a few though.
You are VERY BRAVE for holding that potato bug! I love bugs but those things have always scared the crap out of me, I've never been able to hold one.

they're freaky looking but essentially harmless if the mouse bit me i think it would be a lot worse

i tossed a potato bug in with one of my centipedes back in the day... it's basically just a big cricket. i was a little disappointed.

I found a potato bug in our backyard ones and it screamed like a little kid. Never seen one before and I was surprised hubby knew what it was. It was running so fast and it had me dancing around the yard. I don't like to be startled at all, so this was not fun. Hubby however was laughing at me.
What a cute little mouse. Great pictures all together.

I've had the same experience with tater bugs. They've creeped me out ever since I was 10 years old at a camp and laid down to sleep only to find there was a tater bug as big as my hand (i swear to god) right next to my face. Seemed it wanted to share the pillow.
I nearly wet myself.

they might be harmless, but still. a neighbor of mine brought me a solfugid once and called it a potato bug. creepy looking critter. took me years to think tarantulas were cute, since i was arachnophobic since i was little.
my kids like tarantulas, orb weavers and those little jumping spiders, but if my boy sees a regular house spider or daddy longlegs - boy does he scream and run . he had fits when he sees ants (well the fire ants in nevada bit him), getting better tho, ants around here are way smaller and don't latch on for dear life when biting.

Don't the potato bugs secrete some type of awful smell?

Adorable baby mouse! I used to keep a pair of blue bellies through the winter, fatten them up and release them when it got warm around april/may.

Potato bugs can give you a nasty bite. They're scavengers so you have to make sure you wash really good if you get bit by one. My uncle got blood poisoning from a potato bug bite.
They don't smell, but they can make a hissing noise similar to what tarantulas do when they stridulate by rubbing their legs together.
