Joeseph

Hi

My name is Joeseph, I am from Orangevale  and just got into keeping inverts. I've been keeping snakes mostly boids for years and still do. I received two emperors and just picked up a pink toe so i Figured id join your forum and say hello = )

sorry for the blurry pics I haven't mastered the art of taking good pics in regards to these guys most of my better shots are taken outside and thats not gonna happen with these guys = / I was also curious to know if anyone would be able to tell the sex/ species of pink toe i have I was told  they didn't know the species but believe it to be a female.

The sp. is Avicularia avicularia, if you could get a good clear shot of the underside there's a better chance at sexing, or come to our meeting in Janurary and bring her along!  Welcom to the hobby!
Joeseph

These are about as clear as I could get = /

Hey Joseph and welocome you should really try to make the next meeting next month and bring you  A. avic and I'm sure there will be some one there that can sex it for you!

Get as close as you can for a pic. Set your camera for a macro focus if you can. It is usually a little flower icon in your settings.

Welcome to the group!
Joeseph

I tried the macro the  problem is I get glare off the side of the tank I will try a few different things to see if i can Get a closer shot.
Edit: I tried a few different angles and I couldn't do anything in regards to the glare and the spider wasn't taking to being handled to well lol. What is it the difference between a male and a female ? if  I had photos as a reference or even a general idea of what I was looking for I could probably do it myself pretty accurately as long as it can be done with  just your eyes.

You could pick it up like this:
Joeseph

I could try but mine is way smaller then that.  I will give it a shot though.
Joeseph

ya no I tried to pick her up like that and wound up chasing a spider up the side of a  my boa rack and across the top lol. This things body is about the size of a quarter... so its not that big yet and I don't have the most delicate touch so I'm worried about hurting it trying to pick it up

this is the best I could do and there is still glare to it  = /

Welcome to the forum.
I suggest you wait til it molts. That is really the best way to sex a Tarantula anyway.

Hope to you see you at our January meeting.

Hey, Joseph.

I have an A. avic as well. They're sweet little things.

As for photographing, turn your flash off. That will help immensely. If you can't turn the flash off, try shooting at night. My avic's habitat is warmed with an overhead bulb that uses red spectrum light, which doesn't disturb the spider but provides good light for shooting.

As an aside, I can't see your whole setup, but keep in mind that avics are arboreal. A tall tank with hollow vertical logs for her to make a home in will make her a happy spider. Mine never touches the ground.
Joeseph

ya If i turn the flash off the camera will blur it and its the flash causing the glare so  = / . It is kept in my snake room so I don't have any heat set up of the pink toe or my emperors cages but that room never gets any colder then 76
