I'll be spending my Christmas at home this year. The house is quiet, and the floorboards squeak when I walk. The fireplace snaps and pops while the fire fills the room with its only light. I sit in my armchair staring into the flames thinking how much I feel like I'm in some long forgotten Poe tale.

Someone rang my doorbell. Perhaps it was a raven come to mock my condition and remind me of my "Lenore". I don't know who it really was. I wasn't expecting anyone. i try not to answer the door if I can help it. If it was someone planning to stab me, I suppose it is a good thing I did not answer. I pray it was not a tenacious villain.

Yes, not to stab us. I think I'll poke the fire now. If the villain returns, I'll have something to defend myself with.

No my "Lenore" is my dead wife; my first wife. She was stabbed in an alley digging through some trash on Christmas Eve several years ago.
