Fall Fang Fest 2009 (Fall Meeting)Date is set for October 3rd, everyone.
Mark your calendars, and let's get to planning.
Fall Fang Fest 2009 is a go go.
Fall feels like pie time... who wants to bring pies?
Anyway, post your ideas for planning, and such, for our fall meeting, here.

And right off the bat (pun not intended) here comes ME reserving a booth
I am not entirely sure exactly what I will bring but one full table should do it. Are we still just doing 'reserves' or did we/should we decide on charging for booths?
By the way I'm bringing the big centipede for a handling demo (not meant to be a demo of "handling pedes" though, more like just a demo of my stupidity )
Pie sounds REALLY good...maybe I'll try to bring a pumpkin pie. I eat that stuff year-round.

I'll bring peach cobbler!
|

Oh yeah, we'll need vanilla ice cream with that!
I'll bring the ice cream and a chinese chicken salad

I saw a few on iStock did a search for Tarantula fangs, for photos only. If you see one that will work , post the link and I'll purchase it I have a few extra credits I can donate :)

Jeez I just realized I have hardly any good pics of threat poses! I get threatened daily too
Well here is what I have:
A bit of photoshopping should clean it up, if not I'll go tick off (aka remove lid) my E. murinus real quick; she always gives nice ones...

I have something that might work. Let me dig it out.

I can my own pumpkin so I always have real pumpkin on hand. I'll make something other than pie though, so maybe it'll be something no one else will have tried before. :)
Hopefully I'll have more patches and like t-shirts and stuff to sell, but I don't to want over-make stuff so probably not all that much. I gotta feel my way into this and not waste money.

SFBATS Meeting: ADVERTISINGLet's plaster craigslist with ads earlier, this time.
I'll start posting ads for the meeting early in September and renew them weekly.
We'll promote it on CRIS, too.
Members, be sure to invite your friends and family.
Rachel's new flyer is looking great.
If you would like flyers to place, PM Rachel with your address and she'll get some to you.
Remember to save the date!
Fall Fang Fest--October 3
New members and friends, we hope you will attend!

Oh, and thanks for putting the info out on the next meeting. We missed you at the last one!

That flyer is awesome! It may scare some people but the pic of those fangs is sweet.
I do have a question about some of the wording. "Special Guest Speakers, Breeding & Sexing Demos, Handling Demo & Much More". I 've been to two of these SFBATS meetings and I've certainly seen handling of tarantulas. I don't think I've seen guest speakers or breeding & sexing demos. Are these just informal demos that people show at their table or are they scheduled events that I've just missed? If the events were in the morning I may have missed them as I usually won't get there until the afternoon. If they are scheduled events, I wonder where the schedule is publicized. thanks in advance.

These are things we have had at past meetings and what we HOPE to have happen at every meeting. Unfortunately it doesn't always turn out the way we would like. Would you like to volunteer for guest speaker?
|
CodeWilster
|
I was always under the impression that the people manning their booths were the "guest speakers". Just about all of us have lots of wonderful knowledge on these animals and anybody who shows up could sit and ask questions and listen to anything as long as they want!
It would be semi-difficult with people coming and leaving all the time too to have a scheduled presentation IMO.
I would be up for it (for school credit I go around to elementary schools, clubs and organizations, etc to give bug presentations locally). Only thing is that I wouldn't be saying anything the 20 people with booths don't already know or have heard, that can transfer that information on a more individual level to those checkin' out their booths.
Just my 2 cents!!!
|
UglyKid2
|
Make it 2 dollars and I'll take you more seriously!
Yes, you are right but we still like to hear and see just about any presentation. Besides, its good practice!
|
CodeWilster
|
Lol. Well I could come up with something as long as somebody could provide maybe a laptop and projector so I could do a powerpoint. (me talking without pictures and videos would be )
|
daveemory
|
As someone who has been to the last two meetings, I agree that the flier makes it seem like much more "formal" events will occur, when it's pretty clear when you're there that it is very "informal".
I would strongly suggest that a simple timeline be suggested, and a few folks commit to doing little "gather 'round and watch this" demos and stuff. Otherwise, the meeting winds up a little... uh... loose. I am a fan of truth in advertising (and as a former independent movie theater owner, I can tell you that people DO respond and want to see stuff in fliers actually happen).

sorry about the double post, I get my admin settings screwed up sometimes..
We've had guest speakers at several meetings and we did have a breeding/sexing demo at the last meeting, we just don't have a "schedule" for these sort of things.
Whoever wants to show up and talk about T's is our "special guest speaker" lol.
Really though, we're workin on it.

And everyone brings one dish that would go with that?

Unfortunately I recently started a very strict diet and probably won't be able to eat just about anything that will be there. :P Guess I'm bringing my own lunch. But I can still bring something for everyone else.

Hey Rachael, do you have a bigger version of that PDF? we have an onsite print shop and was going to ask our guy if he could print a big version that we could put on our table at the Sac show? IDK if there is enough time but willing to try :) the cost is cheap..real cheap to Clark employees :) we also do magnetic vehical signs :P

I'll need a table too. As for food, what if everyone brought a dish from different countries? A "Cuisine of the World" sort of thing with Mexican, Italian, African, Chinese, etc...
|

I actually think it would go together better if we stayed with one country and dont mix it up. Not sure I'd want to mix my Mexican food with Irish...lol

Ok, can the country be Canada?
Fall Fang/Bacon Fest, ey?
==================
Im going to see if there are cub/girl scouts in the area, to invite them to our meeting. Im sure it would be cool for them to see, and it can create and inspire some future hobbyists.

Marlene will be our super duper raffle ticket seller, again, and we'll try to get some bodies at this meeting.
Im going to see about inviting some scout groups in the area to see if they'd be interested in checking out our meeting. That would be cool and may create some future hobbyists.

Sounds like a standard potluck, so bring any dish, dessert, or drinks (non-alcohol) you wish!

EdgarOrtega

Something we've never really done that I think would be a good idea to get members of the Concord community who might be interested in our meeting is do some foot work and put up paper flyers announcing our meeting. These can be placed on telephone poles and public areas. They can also be handed out to people in key locations.
It would be an efficient and inexpensive way to bring in members of the community, families, etc. who may include future hobbyists, or at the very least people who can learn an appreciation for the animals.
I can spend part of a day putting these up in Concord, and its something anyone can do in their neighborhoods as long as you dont mind the footwork and have time to spare.
Members who would like to help the group, but arent sure how, can participate in this as well, and it would be a good cheap way to promote the meeting in many cities.
What do you all think?
|
EdgarOrtega
|
Alright, folks!
I just received a package with a bunch of "mystery brachys" that will be available as prizes in the 'FALL FANG FEST!' raffle!
These and others will be donated by Dee and myself on behalf of the California Reptile & Invertebrate Society. CRIS supports SFBATS!
Be sure to make it to this meeting! We'll have many more prizes to be won at the raffle.
Also, be sure to support SFBATS and purchase your raffle tickets at the meeting.
Anyone wanting to donate raffle prizes, let me know!
|
northswan04
|
INFO On the raffle:
Learning from the first raffle, selling tickets is a good idea however many well intentioned including those who come in with kids and not a lot of cash, and people who can only afford one or two tickets get left out from winning so here is what I would like to do: Originally we had a free raffle and everyone wins, I would like to keep that theme while bringing in some extra cash. I liked the suggestion for the Sac Show of giving a raffle ticket with a donation. Any size donation ($1 or $2 and up?) gets a free raffle ticket. The second thing is as we all know Fred is still healing and their family could still use any extra help they can get so I would like to take the top three donate items and raffle them off for say $5 per ticket with the proceeds going to Fred and his family.
So that is two raffles.
I am also open to suggestions, let me know if you like this plan.
|
EdgarOrtega
|
Hmmm, how about we just do a separate collection for Fred?
This way we keep the SFBATS raffle collection separate, and if people would like to organize a collection for Fred, that would be better, I think. Im sure members will pitch in. They did last time, and still kept the SFBATS raffle separate.
If someone wants to donate some items to raffle specifically for Fred's cause, though, that sounds cool with me.
Also, everyone who'll have a table let's all who can stay for the whole meeting do so. We advertise that it will go to 4:00 so we should stay set up until then.

Hey guys! I've manage to get 8 people who said they would show as well as the donation jar on my desk, there is only a few bucks in there now but am sure it will pick up closer to Thursday (i'm off Fridays) and will bring the proceeds over to you guys on Saturday :) The donation will be from Clark Pest Control and myself :)
