Custom enclosuresAs some of you know I like to make custom enclosures out of things I find at garage sales, Pier 1 import type stores or wherever. I will be bringing some of these to the meeting and I hope to see you guys bring yours. It's probably too late for next week but I would like to talk about having a custom enclosure contest at our future meetings. We can come up with a name for it, prizes, ribbons or trophies even. Lets hear your ideas!

That sounds like a great idea. Some thoughts.
It may be best as an annual thing, one out of four meetings so it would be more 'event-ish' and stir up some real competition for ya.
Prizes... Either we could spraypaint a rubber tarantua gold and have a 'golden tarantula' award that rotates, (maybe 2nd and 3rd place could get spray painted spider novelty rings) or have cheesy certificates made up, or if it would be plausible to do the competition nearly first thing, we could dip into the raffle items. First place gets first pick, Second place gets to pick after five names are drawn, third place after ten names are drawn. The last option only if everyone agreed with it though.
There's also the question on who judges, and what the criteria are.
I've been in Woodcarving shows, and a vaguely similar point system might work.
Judges are picked for experience keeping tarantulas, and (hopefully) one or two, for being familiar with making stuff and the effort involved.
Each cage entered, gets a number instead of its makers name to promote objectivity, even if everyone knows whose enclosure is whose.
There are several criteria that the judges rate from 1-10, ten being the highest. Then the scores are combined. High score wins.
Craftsmanship- Polished edges, clean seams, etc
Practicality- Cleaning ease, user-friendly door, Spidey safety, etc
Asthetics- How attractive the whole thing is.
Security- a Kritter Keeper would be a 4, a Spidey Alcatraz that foils T's and uninvited humans alike would be a 10.
Above and Beyond- (only 5 points as this would probably be 'overflow' from another criteria) Anything that is just really, really, cool. Like... etched glass in a T's form, sculpted marble base (heh) or a well established inhabitant looking very comfy, and making full use of his/her space.
And after that's all counted, the judges scores for each cage are added, and high score wins.
Bleh, that's a lot of writing. :-P

Or because atm out group is rather small and familiar we could number the cages and everyone could get one vote (write your name and the # you vote for on a square and put it in a box).

Admittedly, that sounds a lot easier.
