Another Itchy SCABIES Invader

Hello Everyone,
My name is Denise and I am another SCABIES invader from the south but hopefully not as itchy as my other brethren.

If there was a Tarantulas Anonymous, I would be the longest term member because there is no cure for me. I will buy and adopt tarantulas no matter what genus or species they are-even Rosehairs.

Currently, over 150 tarantulas (rare and common) own me including a mega load of B. albopilosum adults, juvs and babies –which by the way are one of my favorite Ts.  I enjoy each one of my tarantulas and I spend a great deal of time studying their behaviors, molting patterns and breeding patterns (breeding is new to me). I keep hand written logs of anything I see or recognize so that I can share my information and compare notes with others.

I have a few breeding projects which includes RCF G. roseas, B. albopilosum, A. versicolor, A. avicularia, C. cyaneopubescens and P. cancerides.  I have some other goodies for future breeding as well.

Even though tarantulas are my first love, I do have a chocolate morph B. Jacksoni and L. infuscatus scorplings(The scorplings came from my husband’s  females and there is more L. Infuscatus babies on the way!) ,  4 different species of roaches, Florida Ivory millipedes, and a couple of Carolina wolf spiders. If you do not own a wolf spider, I encourage you to get one. They are easy to care for, beautiful to look at and have very cute personalities.

I currently went through the infamous nematode fiasco that you may have read about, but unless you have experienced it, you cannot even begin to image the nightmare that one goes through.  This did not happen to me for lack of care or bad tarantula hygiene on my behalf. If you ever want to know anything about it, I have several research papers combined with my own experience. I want to publically thank Ken and Chris Young for identifying and helping me through this difficult and frustrating time. I am saddened by my loss of 4 tarantulas but thankful that my established tarantulas and babies were not infected. I caught it at an early stage so as of today, I am phorid fly and nematode free.

I consider owning tarantulas a privilege and not a right (many states do not allow tarantulas or scorpions as pets). So many people want to ban them as pets so I spend as much time educating the general public about them to the best of my knowledge in hopes that people see the beauty and wonders of these magnificent creatures.

I DO NOT support companies or organizations that think it’s a good idea to stir fry, frappe, grill or fry tarantulas for human consumption at public events-especially bug events. Instead, energy should be spent dispelling myths and educating the public of why we are in this hobby in the first place.

I look forward to conversing and meeting new faces at future events.

Glad you can join us. Feel free to join any caravans headed up this way for our meeting in January. We'd welcome you to the dark side of California. The tarantulas here all wear cardigans, you really should see it.

welcome. sit down and stay awhile. i had T's a few years back (bought a rosehair to cure my fear of spiders and got hooked  ). before i knew  it i had 38 (mostly slings, mostly aphonopelmas ).
but had to sell and give away all of them when i had to move out of state. all but one (my first rosie) went to a local member of AB. but since i'm back in my own place i have 2 T's again. a rosehair and a b.smithi (i would like more, but the apt mngr told me 2 critters in cages ). well i have 1 hamster for the kids (that's a critter), 1 betta for my kids (i'll claim him as a critter), the T's are in my room (they are my arachnophobia meds  . and my boy caught a little pacific tree frog here in the apt complex. got told they will actually invade the apts at times (so i claim him a local visitor and invader).

oh, and i'll eventually get my some aphonopelmas and curlies...

Welcome!  I'd love to hear more about your records.  I'm trying to be as detailed as possible with mine.

Tarantulas are like potato chips, you can't have just one!   :D

Re: Another Itchy SCABIES Invader

Welcome Denise,

I read your posts on Scabies about  the nematodes and see you have posted here as well.
Hope to meet you soon, maybe at one of our meetings.

Welcome to our crazy little world. Sounds like you know your stuff. Why don't you move up here?

Yep this one is worth kidnapping.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.  :D  I will be heading your way for one of your get togethers in the future.

If you are ever down south, let me know! Anyone going to the January reptile show in Pomona?

I have a lot to learn and I am rather new to the hobby. I have just been through alot in a little amount of time and I have great people like you that help me out.

:D
