'09 April Sling Fling! It's never too early to plan the next meeting. Do we want to use the same flyer as we did last April?
Also which Saturday works for everybody?
April 4th, 11th,18th, or 25th?
|
Arachnocat
|
I think we need a new flyer. Maybe just update it a bit with some different colors and pics.
It would definitly be good to start planning now :-)
I'd like to find a cheap signmaker to make us some cool vinyl banners we can use at our meetings.
|
Bonedog
|
Another meeting! Yeah! This time Kiely and I will plan so we can stay the whole meeting.
|
llamamama
|
I agree, too, that a nice banner is a good idea. NBHS had their banner made at Fastsigns, but Rachel probably has better connections for stuff like that.
|
BayLee
|
That sounds great. Early planning is always a plus. Not to mention that we could even have a much bigger turn out. Maybe get a local Newspaper involved. Edgar seems to do a good job contacting them, maybe he can work on that once we know the date. I am looking forward to it.
|
EdgarOrtega
|
A banner is a good idea. I'd certainly like to have one for tables at the reptile shows this year, so that can be used at many things we'll do.
|
BayLee
|
Rachel, maybe we should get a few quotes for the banners to see who can give us a good price. Let me know if you need help with obtaining them.
|
UglyKid2
|
If we don't have enough money in our treasury Edgar said he'd pay for it!
Seriously though, I'll chip in $20
|
a7051
|
i can chip in a couple bucks too.
|
Arachnocat
|
I'll have to check some prices around here to see how much they cost. I would be willing to donate some money too. I'll compare prices and let you guys know what I find out.
|
BayLee
|
I will put some money up too.
|
Bonedog
|
I'll help also. At the meeting a donation jar would be a good idea also. Of course cash donations only. ( unless you wanted spiders.) Then some of us folks can throw some money your way when we're in town.

SFBATS Meeting Date and IdeasI would like to propose the date for the April meeting to be on the 18th. Easter weekend is the week prior, so I figure that the next week end would be good.
We also have to procure the Vet's Hall , make up the flyers and banners for this event.
Can someone take care of media? We need a speaker, either Robert (Insect Geeks)or Scott Bemis (Scotts Tarantulas).
Do we have a small entrance fee, or depend on the donation box to cover expences. I can sell (for a low price) a tarantula for a fundraiser raffle and sell tickets. I have a 3+ " B.smithi that I would bring for that purpose. Maybe Ken could do the same. We could draw for those two prizes right after lunchtime to draw more people to arrive earlier. Of course we would still maintain our free raffle through out the day.
This could pay for our new magazine or logo patch production.
|
EdgarOrtega
|
If anyone would like to do some bug presentations on behalf of SFBATS, this could bring in decent funds each time for our coming show or any other expenses; giving us more money to play with without tapping into member pockets as deeply.
All fund raising ideas on the table. Money=options
|
a7051
|
maybe like $5 to get in.. kids 13 and under free ?
*shrug* 30peeps that's $150

Fred, April 18th sounds good to me. So far nothing has been planted.
We need to work on the banner and flyer to get this out in time and have the banner ready not only for our meeting but also for the LA Bugfair in May.
Fred or Ken can reserve the Vet's Hall again, so we are covered. It would be great if Robert can do something and maybe update us on his book. Invite Scott if he would like to give a presentation and maybe Edgar can talk about Snakes.
I agree a small entrance fee would be great. For Kids $2.00 and Adults $4.00 or $5.00.
A Fundraiser raffle sounds good between Fred and maybe Ken we can get a third person to donate.
For lunch I think we can do a pot luck again. I like he Lasagna last time. Laurie did an awesome job, I never tried John's, so maybe John can cook for us. We could make this a maybe "Mexican Feast" next time, what do you think? Everyone brings a Mexican dish.
This event's funds should allow us to start working on the Magazine and other items we may need.
If anyone likes to donate other cool Tarantula, Snake and bug related items to the Fundraiser raffle that would really be helpful as well.
Edgar, maybe you can contact local Newspapers etc. Would be great to get us in the paper. I think everyone wants to read some fun stuff instead of the depressing news that we read every day in the paper.
Let's make this a fun event and get more members.
Those are just my thoughts, let's see what everyone else has suggest.
Let's get the ball rolling guys!
|
llamamama
|
I don't know if Rachel has a good source for banners, but I know that Fastsigns did a great job for NBHS. And it only took three days, including designing it. So I wouldn't worry too much about getting the banner done on time.
I'll see what Al and I can rummage up for the raffle.
LOL Yes, it's John's turn to cook. I'll bake instead.

Re: SFBATS Meeting Date and IdeasThe 18th sounds good. I sent in a quote request to fastsigns and a few other places today. I'm thinking the banner size should be around 4-6 feet.
I'll take care of the banner and any advertising we can come up with. I'm going to check with Sonoma Pets (part of the Press Democrat) and see how much it would be to place an ad in there. It would also be nice if they could write an article for us. The magazine is mostly dogs and cats so I think they need some variety.
I will also work on the flyers and get those printed ASAP. I should have time to do some art for it next week.
I don't know about charging admission yet. I don't think we're quite big enough for that and I think people like that they can come look at our stuff for free. Just my opinion though. A small admission fee would probably be ok.
A fundraiser raffle is a great idea. I think we can make quite a bit doing that, especially if we have some nice T's to raffle along with other goodies. I'll see what I can bring. We could also do a silent auction, but that's a bit more work. We could always spend a bit on some things and make our money back + some though. Just an idea.
Anywhos, those are my thoughts. Can't wait till April! :-)
p.s. when we raise enough money, I think the magazine is going to be awesome. I'll bring the samples they sent me to the meeting so you guys can see.
|

Hey, fastsigns has some great prices. We could do a 4' x 2' banner for only $58. That's full color too. I'll get started on it Monday and put in our logo once voting is over
|
llamamama
|
That sounds about the same as the price for the NBHS banner. If you are using Fastsigns in Santa Rosa, let me know.
|
sntcruzan
|
My ThoughtsUpon thinking about it, I would like to keep our meetings free. no matter how big we get it gives new people an opportunity to "visit" us and see what we are all about. I think that we can use the donation box and charge for a super raffle. Of course I still like the idea of our free raffle ,too. When somebody gets a free T, they think it is way cool and it also gets them into the hobby.
Any one have different thoughts?
|
BayLee
|
Either way is fine I think. Maybe and annual membership fee would help with advertisement, the magazine and other things SFBATS would need moneys for.
|
northswan04
|
I think a super raffle would be cool, maybe $2 a ticket or something?
|
Bonedog
|
I'll just throw it out there. I'm donating $100 for sure and I hope to give $150. Kiely and I had a great time at the last meeting and we want to see them continue. We'll also buy raffle tickets. I'm a comic collector and I'd be more than willing to donate something from my Spiderman collection. I've got both comics and action figures so if there's any interest let me know. I'll look at what I have and send in some shots. My son Logan wants to come down this time and look at Ricky's snakes. He's doing all his research know so he'll let me know what he's looking for.
|
EdgarOrtega
|
That is really awesome of you, Bonedog. I'm glad you had a good time at the meeting. It was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed meeting many members; especially all the new members who stopped by. I'm sure he'll love seeing Ricky's reptiles, as I'm sure everyone will enjoy seeing what great photographs he'll have on display.
Groups and activities like these, with so many exceptional fun people involved in putting it all together, create enjoyable experiences that we can build on to continue or better the experience each time.
It makes me happy to see people like John and Fred who love the hobby so much; you can tell they really really love it, and it helps others draw enjoyment from their experience. Laurie does such a nice job of presenting what she has at her table, with Al, and has some great info, especially for young people. Rachel is just so pleasant to speak with and very talented. I love her set-ups. Lony's excitement, enthusiasm, personality, and eagerness to share and learn new information makes her an asset to the group and a joy to anyone who meets her.
You're all nice, fun people, and I know that this next meeting will be just as pleasant for those who attend. Seeing all the animals is one thing, but spending time with such great people with shared interests is what did it for me. I like seeing how everyone contributes to put it all together into these meetings. I wish I could do more for the group. I love all you guys.

Yes, that IS very generous, especially in these times.
Perhaps we should make a list of things the group needs/wants, so that we can plan where these kind donations are going to be spent.
|
BayLee

That sure is very generous Bonedog.
Laurie, I agree with you. We should have some type of infoboard of what the Society has purchased and is going to in the future. This way everyone knows where the money goes.

hey Bone Dog I'll be sure to bring my reptiles next time again and thanks for supporting this. I guess I should get busy on my photography so I can have some fresh material for you all to oogle at :-P Hey Edgar can I bring your retic to the next meeting? maybe I'll bring one of my little chondros as well to show off I'm finally picking up my 4th one tomorrow YAY!! :-P

Fund raiser idea thanks to Edgar: A book of poetry, everyone who would like to can donate 1-2 origional invert poem/art, we can print them in a nice format mini book and sell them for like $5 a piece. This idea can definitely be refined, and maybe we can even find a publisher and print it as a children's book to sell on amazon with the proceeds going to SFBATS or something in the long run. But wouldn't it be fun?
|
BayLee

Nice Idea! I am all for it.
|
EdgarOrtega

Coool! That IS a neat idea. We have SOME cultured members, I'm sure...
Anyway, i'd buy one, and would be happy to contribute to its content.
Also, gives me an excuse to draw something.
|

If anyone has more access than I do I am all for it but I can possibly find a publisher or self publish through UCD, I just need help formatting.
If everyone is for this I'll make a formal thread for it and have y'all email submissions to me. Everyone will get credit in the book of course.
|
llamamama
|
Very cool idea! That could be a lot of fun.
If anyone wants us to, Al and I can bring reptiles to the next meeting, too. It's what we do, after all. We didn't bring any last time because we were bringing T's, for obvious reasons.

I would like to have a page where everyone can see what treasury moneys we have and where it goes/who donated.
I think I can just make a forum post maybe, then people can check on it that way. We currently have $176 in the treasury. I will be buying the new business cards and flyers for us and donating a little bit to the banner cost.
I think we should go with Fastsigns. They're close to my work to so I can go talk to them about art requirements and stuff.
BTW, voting ends at 12 tuesday for the logo poll.

I would bring my big hognose if I could figure out a way to transport and display him. He's a biggie. People were wanting to see him last time so might put him in a tupperware container or something.

Hi, guys. We're going to have to change the date for the Spring Fling. It seems the hall is not available on the 18th, but it is on the 25th. Ken checked it out when trying to reserve hall.
So, will the 25th work for everyone? If we can agree on this soon, we can go ahead a book that day before it becomes unavailable.

How much fun is this meeting going to be? Let's list some of the highlights of habbnins...
o Last meeting was a blast, and we have more members now!
o DeeCasey is coming from SoCal to meet us!
o SCABIES members are taking a roadtrip to join the fun
o There will be a free raffle giving away lots of cool prizes
o There will be food
o There will be Bugs
o There will be reptiles
o There will be cool people
o There will be new friends made
o There will be belly dancers
o There will be fun.
I can promise all but the belly dancers.... BUT everything else is a GO!
This will be the biggest event to ever hit the tarantula world. This meeting is going to blow your mind. When its over.. you'll be on the floor on your hands and knees looking for your other shoe, it will be just that fun... It will be the T-Society meeting all others will be based upon. There will be good times, the lame will walk, the blind will see... I don't even know what to say. Grown men will be crying, and humans and animals will be united. This will be bigger than a Tony Robbins motivational seminar, I so swear...
Don't miss it, or you'll hate yourself for four months.

As our group is growing, and our meeting place remaining the same, it may be wise to get a tally of everyone planning to have a table at this meeting, so we don't run out of space.
Who's will be having tables?
I assume John, Fred, Laurie, and Lony will have tables set up. Ken also has stuff out somewhere, usually.
Anyone else???
|
llamamama
|
I will need at least one table. John and I can combine our stuff, but we will still need two tables for the ambassadors that way. If Al brings anything (other than me and my stuff) he'll need a table. I'll ask him if he wants one.
|
Arachnocat
|
I probably won't need an entire table this time. If I could share with someone that would be cool. Only bringing a few spidys and maybe a snake to show off
|
BayLee

Rachel we can share a Table if you like. I don't need a whole one.
